Noel and Cole at Longwood House

A house concert is something we might associate with English stately homes, but as my experience today proves, the house concert concept is alive and well in NZ.  The format is just as relevant now as it was a hundred years ago –  although admitedly it now competes with more sophisticated, if not more charming forms of entertainment.

Featuring four singers, an accompanist and the obligatory lemonade and cucumber sandwiches this concert showcased staples of the genre from Noel Coward and Cole Porter.

The performance was well crafted with four singers taking turns to sing solo, duets and the occasional quartet while telling the stories of these amazing songs.  The repertoire although written in the 20’s and 30’s had lost none of its humour or wit, and judging from the smiles in the room, was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience of around 80 or so music lovers.

It was a great way to spend a long weekend Sunday and I can’t believe it’s taken me this many years to experience my first house concert.  Can’t wait until the next one!
